Addiction Counselling in Toronto
Addictions rarely revolve around just our item of choice. They are complex emotional issues that can be influenced by our family environment, relationships, school, career, and friends. Addictions can include: Alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, and smoking.
What is Addiction Counselling & Psychotherapy?
Counselling and Psychotherapy can provide lasting change in dealing with your addiction. Addiction therapists at KMA help you explore the root triggers of your addiction, which can include emotions, workplace issues, family relationships, and social environments.
Addiction therapists also develop treatment plans which empower you to take control and free yourself from the behaviours. Our aim is not just to talk: but to develop tools and resources to change your way of thinking, reverse irrational or dysfunctional behaviours, and promote psychologically healthier patterns of living.
If serious, you may also need to meet with our supervising psychologist to diagnose, monitor and treat any mental health issues. Addiction therapists may also be able to refer you to a rehabilitation centre if a residential stay is needed.
How does Addiction Counselling at KMA work?
Psychotherapy and Counselling here at KMA Therapy begins with a 30 minute consultation with our director, Kimberly Moffit, or one of our intake counsellors.
In these thirty minutes, we will ask important questions to determine the severity of the problem and the treatment approach needed:
What are your daily habits – how does the addiction fit in?
How is the addiction affecting your relationships/career/family?
What are your current coping mechanisms for stress?
What life situations are contributing to the severity of your addiction?
We’re also asking questions to get a better sense of your personality. Here at KMA, we believe it’s very important that we get to know you so that your counselor is the ‘right fit. The consultation is also a wonderful time to address any questions you may have.
Finally, we will provide you with a customized ‘plan of action’ – this includes the recommended eating disorder counselor who is best equipped to suit your needs, a recommended duration of therapy (if applicable), and a recommendation for any additional testing or psychological services we feel would be helpful.
The fee for consultations is $130 and this is usually covered by your workplace benefits package.
*Severe cases of drug and alcohol addiction can be very difficult to treat and often patients recover best with a team of medical professionals. If during your consultation we feel you would benefit from a team medical approach, we will refer you to the appropriate inpatient or outpatient program that can provide medical support.
